Can I buy a car during ‘circuit breaker?’

New and used car showroom

All new and used car showrooms in Singapore are closed till 4th May 2020 as they are not essential products or services. There is no COE bidding available in April so even if you were to purchase a new car, there is no COE available for bidding. However, you can still submit for a car loan application online as banks remain open.

What about buying from direct owners or consignment companies? Though LTA online is still available for doing transfers and insurance companies are open for you to buy premiums online, you are not allowed to buy from direct owners or consignment companies unless you don’t need to see the car physically. The temporary new law states that you cannot meet anyone during this period even if they are your family members unless your family members need help for example an elderly family member or a young member who requires the care of your other family members.

The final verdict is you can still buy a car but not meet anyone relating to the transaction physically. So, even if you were to buy without meeting anyone unrelated physically, you probably won’t be able to collect it as well. However, you can shortlist the cars that you are interested to buy now and head down to buy it when the ‘circuit breaker’ period is over.
